Case study
As of right now, you are a member of the People Practice Team and working on your CIPD certification. However, during an upcoming CIPD Conference, your Line Manager is running an interactive session to showcase the work of several organisations. The purpose of the presentation is to highlight how personal and ethical values can be applied and the critical role people practice professionals play in contributing to (if not driving) discussions to influence others with conviction and self-confidence. In addition to exploring these issues, the presentation will also examine the benefits of inclusive behaviour to ensure that everyone is treated fairly at work. Additionally, this presentation will explain how positive working relationships and improved performance can be achieved through this strategy.
Task preparation:
- You should plan your assessment with your Assessor at the start of your assignment and, if possible, agree on milestones so that they can help you track your progress throughout.
- To guide and support your evidence, refer to the indicative content in the unit.
- Make sure you pay attention to how your evidence is presented since you are part of the PeoplePractice team.
- You should ensure that the evidence you gathered for this assessment remains your own.
You will also benefit from:
- Formative feedback from your Assessor must be completed and acted upon.
- Describe how you have experienced learning opportunities and continued professional development.
- Reviewing CIPD Insights, Fact Sheets, and related online material on these topics.
Task One: Presentation on ethical conduct at a conference
As a result of your manager’s request, you have been tasked with preparing a presentation to colleagues about the importance of ethical behaviour and the business case for it. Presenter notes, presentation slides, and the evidence you have gathered are all needed in your Presentation Pack. Ensure that your presentation pack is aimed at the appropriate audience and follows a business format.
In your presentation, you must provide details of the business case for ethical people practices and an overview of the various influences on ethical practice. As a handout for delegates, you will also need to provide a Briefing handout that summarises the main points of your presentation in an accessible, easy-to-read manner.
Your presentation should include the following points and refer to the CIPD Professional Map whenever appropriate:
- Describe the requirements of a people professional and define the term professional. (1.1)
- Explain what ethical values mean by giving at least three examples of your values and how they affect how you work and develop working relationships (1.2)
- Analyse how you could/would have done it based on your work or personal experience
- – Participated in discussions to ensure the application of people practices.
- – How to effectively communicate to influence and engage others.
- – How you could raise issues such as organisational policies or the leadership style that conflict with ethical values or legislation. (1.3, 1.5)
- Based on relevant theory, provide a robust argument that includes both the business and human benefits of employees feeling included, valued and treated fairly in the workplace (2.1)
- Identify a people practice initiative that has been put in place as a result of some form of internal or external feedback, explain its purpose, and explain how you would evaluate its impact, paying particular attention to levels of engagement within the organisation. (2.2, 2.3)
Task Two: Portfolio of CPD
The purpose of this task is to demonstrate your commitment to Continuous Professional Development as a people practice professionally in conjunction with the CIPD Profession Map. A portfolio containing a range of activities should be presented in this task.
Providing a context for your learning journey is essential to introduce your portfolio.
Activity 1 – Professional Development in Context (3.1)
Describe the following;
- What role is being played by people professionally?
- How do these changes affect our CPD?
- How does a good-practice CPD differ from a bad-practice CPD?
Evaluation – Self-Evaluation – Activity 2
Understanding where you came from, where you are, and where you want to go should be the first step in your CPD.
- The CIPD Professional Map provides a sample self-assessment tool that could be used to gauge your competency against the core behaviours. It can be in any format, but the evidence is required to verify the activity (an example template is provided in Appendix 1).
- This self-assessment, along with your other feedback, will allow you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, setting goals as part of your Professional Development Plan (3.2).
- It is now essential to consider meeting these development objectives to complete your PDP. Consider the learning opportunities you have at your disposal and decide which initiative is most appropriate to help you on your learning journey according to each of your development objectives. (3.3)
Reflective practice – Activity 3
Reflecting on our daily experiences is an essential part of our personal development, so we learn from them, capturing what went well and what didn’t and applying these findings. Think about the following scenarios as you reflect.
- Recognise times when you have taken responsibility for your work/actions, paying particular attention to recognising mistakes you have made and how you have corrected them, as well as what you believe you have learned from these experiences. (1.4).
- Include at least two examples of how you have worked inclusively, as well as how you have built positive relationships with others. What you did and what skills and behaviours you demonstrated should focus on your reflections. (2.4)
Assessment of your learning and CPD – Activity 4.
Finally, we assess the overall impact of our learning as part of our CPD. As a result, you should consider the impacts, including both positive and negative effects. For example, what was the impact on you, your team, colleagues, customers, stakeholders, organisation, organisation, or department? This assessment will require you to complete a record of your learning over the last 12 months (3.4).
