Description:
When addressing the question of what EBP is and how to use it in organisations, learners must ensure that they pay attention in giving various aspects. They must cover the following aspects when answering this question:
- Define evidence-based practice
- Explain how evidence-based practice can be applied in an organisation.
- Explain the components of evidence-based practice.
- Discuss various types of evidence-based practice.
- Give examples and case studies.
- State the sources of your work.
- Defining evidence-based practice:
To begin with, learners must ensure that the answer has defined what evidence-based practice is.
Secondly, they must ensure that they have explained that evidence-based practice involves the integration of various key elements.
See the elements below:
- Best Evidence:
This includes the latest research results, organisational guidelines, and other relevant information. They must also prove that they understand these concepts form the foundation of EBP.
- Organizational Expertise:
Ensure that EBP incorporates the expertise and knowledge of people professionals in an organisation. Learners must ensure they use examples to illustrate how this expertise can be harnessed.
- Patient Values and Preferences:
Emphasize the importance of considering individual patient values and preferences in the
decision-making process, as this leads to more patient-centered care.
2. The Application of EBP in Organisations:
Here, learners must give details on how EBP can be applied within an organisation. To achieve this, they must:
a. Identify Key Stakeholders:
Explain that in organisations, various stakeholders such as people professionals, managers, employers and administrators are involved in decision-making processes.
b. Evidence-based decision-making.
Provide examples of how EBP can be used when making such decisions as implementing new policies and allocating resources at the workplace.
c. Continuous improvement:
Emphasise that EBP is a continuous commitment to improving service quality and efficiency across an organisation.
3. Components of the Application:
The process of determining the components of EBP involves:
a. Formulating Clinical Questions:
Learners must explain how to formulate specific questions.
b. Finding evidence:
Explain how to find the best evidence using literature, peer review, and other reputable sources.
c. Critical Appraisal:
Describes the process of evaluating evidence to determine its validity, accuracy, and relevance.
d. Implementation and evaluation:
Emphasise the importance of implementing evidence-based changes and observing their effectiveness.
4. Types of Application:
Learners must also discuss various types of EBP and how they affect organisational decisions and outcomes. They can discuss the following:
- Application:
Taking a hospital set up as our case study, learners must be able to discuss how clinicians can use EBP to guide them in making clinical decisions such as choosing the most appropriate treatment option for a patient.
- Organisational Management:
Learners must be able to elaborate on how people professionals and managers use EBP in resource allocation, policy allocation and enhancing the overall organisational performance.
- Policy Development:
Learners must also be able to explore how policymakers EBP into an organisation’s development, ensuring that they are based on the best available evidence.
5. Examples and Case Studies:
Learners must include real-life examples and case studies that indicate how evidence-based practice can be effectively used in an organisation. Giving examples provides clear evidence of the impact of EBP decision-making and outcomes in an organisation.
6. Evidence:
Learners must provide reliable sources of evidence for EBP from CIPD learning materials, journals, podcasts and books. Among the reliable sources are:
George, S. (2023) HR policies. Available from https://www.cipd.org/en/knowledge/factsheets/hr-policies-factsheet/
